In March next year, trade unions from the American continent will create the Confederación Sindical de las Américas (CSA). According to researcher Achim Wachendorfer, the new confederation offers an opportunity for trade union renewal.
The formation of the CSA was spurred by the merger of International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) and the World Confederation of Labour (WCL) into the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), one year ago.
In Latin America, the merger caused a lively debate on the future of trade unionism on the continent. The new confederation will include affiliates from the US and Canada.
According to Wachendorfer, unions should seek collaboration with social movements and with the continent’s progressive governments. The Brasilian ‘novo sindicalismo’ is quoted as an example.
