Unions target freelancers

“Successful freelance workers must build and maintain relationships. For this reason it has been suggested that key lessons for those seeking to organize them may be learnt from unions in the entertainment and media industries”, reports the New Unionism website in its newsletter.
The website points out that Canada’s largest media union recently announced it was setting up a freelancers’ union. In the Netherlands, the CNV confederation has started organising self-employed workers, following the example of the FNV, which has 25,000 self-employed members. The American Freelancers’ Union ‘may well be the fastest growing in the world’. In other countries, there are initiatives to organise freelancers as well.
