‘Union must become career coach’

“The successes unions have achieved during the past years have made us lazy”, chairwoman Judith Ploegman of the youth branch of Dutch confederation FNV said at a meeting on the future of the trade union movement. “It is important to increase union density among young people. Employers are hardly afraid of actions or strikes”.
Some participants in the debate said unions should focus on individual member services rather than collective action. It was argued that unions should become career coaches for their members. Ploegman said unions should do both and organise agency workers and workers in sectors such as cleaning and retail.
