Tomato pickers break growers’ resistance to pay rise

Tomato pickers in Florida are among the lowest-paid and most exploited workers of America. After years of campaigning, they managed to convince chains like Taco Bell, McDonald’s, Burger King and Subway to pay a slightly better price for the tomatoes, but the growers lobby refused to pass this money on to the workers for whom it was intended. Recently, one of the largest growers broke ranks, Labor Notes reports. Finally, the campaign of the tomato pickers and their allies seems to have yielded a victory.
