‘Cleaners’ campaign boosts confidence in unions’

Contrary to other types of institutions, public confidence in unions has risen during the first half of 2010, according to a study of the Netherlands institute for Social Research (SCP). This rise may have been caused by the campaigns of cleaners and municipal street sweepers and refuse collectors, the SCP suggests.
In a response, organiser Herrie Hoogenboom says: “The cleaners have shown what unions are about. This has increased public confidence. The cleaners’ action was a real organising campaign, based on the vision ‘back to the basis’. We need to show that the union is an organisation of and for the people. That appeals to people!”
