Organising no cure-all

Website Globalinfo has published an interview by Bart van der Steen with Peter Birke, author of a book on the organising approach unions in Germany (and in other countries including the Netherlands) have adopted from Anglo-Saxon countries. Brike says that organising is a promising approach. First because it includes analysing power structures, and second because unions get more in touch with day-to-day reality at the workfloor, instead of only showing up for collective labour agreement negotiations. Still, Birke is critical: too often, organising remains limited to small-scale projects and too often, organising is ‘abused’ for outdated, conflict-averse union politics.
