President Henk van der Kolk of Dutch union FNV Bondgenoten has launched a Twitter campaign calling on people to go out and vote on 2 March. He advises to vote for an opposition party, so as to make it harder for the current right-wing government to implement its budget cuts on childcare, education, meaningful work for young handicapped people, public transport, health care and care for the elderly.
Yesterday, a study was published showing that there are relatively many swing voters among union members. This suggests that a union campaign should be able to have an impact on voting behaviour. On the other hand, these swing voters are mostly people who have over the past years made a switch from the Social Democrats (PvdA) to the Socialist Party (SP).
