This month, 800 Swiss seafarers and boatmen and women have transferred from the Swiss trade union Unia to Nautilus, an international union of maritime professionals. Nautilus now operates on both ends of the Rhine. Nautilus general secretary Mark Dickinson commented: “The agreement with Unia is a logical step that builds upon our previously-stated commitment to continue developing the Nautilus International concept of a trans-boundary union for maritime professionals working in the most globalised of all industries.”
Nautilus was launched two years ago as a joint Anglo-Dutch initiative, affiliated both to the British TUC and the Dutch FNV, as well as branch federations. The union has 23,000 members.
