‘Occupy inspires unions to embrace bold tactics’

“Organized labour’s early flirtation with Occupy Wall Street is starting to get serious”, writes Steven Greenhouse of the New York Times. Unions give practical support to the protest movement and have helped prevent evictions of Occupy camps. At the same time, they are inspired by Occupy to engage in civil disobedience and to use social media more aggressively to publish instant updates on protest actions. They also put more emphasis on grassroots mobilisation and align their message with the 1% versus 99% message on social inequality. Occupy protestors have joined unions in protests against Verizon and Sotheby’s, while retaining their autonomous position.
